Chapter Eleven

On Saturday morning Raymond Ellison, Victor’s solicitor, arrived for the reading of the will.

Ellison was one of six solicitors who worked in the Sector One Central Government Legal Department. All wills were made by appointment and were logged with one of the offices depending on what Sector people lived in. The basic service that left all money, property and possessions to a single relative was charged at a flat fee of six hundred pounds. Any variations were considered extras, as was bequeathing individual items. For those who did not make a will or who could not afford the administration charge, everything was automatically ‘inherited’ by the Government and supposedly went to the funding of public services. Adam didn’t really believe this, not since learning the truth about the L.S.A. He wouldn’t be surprised if the money went to financing their underhand activities.

Ellison was a small man in his forties. He spoke in a rather nasal tone that would crack in places the more nervous he became. He’d had several meetings with Adam’s father over the years and it had been clear that Victor had intimidated him. He looked uncomfortable now as he opened the file on his computer containing Victor’s final will. Wills were sealed in individual files that were locked to thumbprint. These could only be accessed by the solicitor who had assisted in the making of the will it concerned. In addition the file would only become active once a death had been registered. This prevented any unauthorised access or fraud from taking place.

They met in the dining room of Venewood. Adam sat at one end of the real oak dining table. Ellison sat in the middle and Joseph and Eleanor were at the other end. This was merely a formality and Adam almost didn’t bother attending at all. The only words he had spoken to his stepbrother since the funeral was that Adam hoped that he’d packed their bags. This had infuriated both Joseph and Eleanor. Legally, however, there was nothing that they could do. Venewood and Larimore Systems now belonged to Adam.

Ivan had been as good as his word and all charges against Adam had been dropped. He had never felt so grateful for this and after returning to Venewood yesterday he had spent the remainder of the day planning his first meeting with the board as the owner of the company. Pitching the new direction would not be easy and Adam did expect some resistance and possible resignations. He didn’t care about any of that. In fact Adam would prefer it that way. He was quite capable of running Larimore Systems single-handed and things would move forward a lot faster without having to gain the agreement of greedy and visionless old men.

Ellison apprehensively cleared his throat as he studied the text that the computer screen displayed. Adam leaned back in his chair and shot Joseph a nasty grin. He took back his misgivings about attending this meeting. He was going to enjoy hearing confirmation of his inheritance immensely.
